QUAIRADING HOSPITAL AUXILIARY PRESENTS CERTIFICATES OF APPRECIATION

On 26th October, the Quairading Hospital Auxiliary, in conjunction with the Hospital, hosted an afternoon to award certificates of appreciation to past and present members for years of voluntary service.

The Auxiliary President, Trudy Johnston, welcomed everyone, especially invited guests and particularly Mrs. Allie Clarke who traveled from Perth and also Mrs. Vera Woods, who returned for the afternoon.

Apologies from Mrs. Edna Kelly, Charlie Lindorff (Auditor for 34 years), Dr. and Mrs. Fleitmann, Dot Bloom, Pip Hall, Robin & Janice Clemens.

Mrs. Johnston read the following resume  -

As this is Quairading’s centenary year, various organizations were encouraged to do something to commemorate the occasion.

As a mater of interest to some residents who are old enough to remember some of the early names, following are the names of past presidents from 1935 until 2007.   Mrs. Growden, Mrs. M. Wilson, Mrs. Whiteford, Mrs. G. Haythornthwaite, Mrs. Cheeseman,  Mrs. Blanche Kevill, Dorothy Fraser, Mrs. Jones, Miss Bid Blake, Gwen Shattock, Mrs. Amy Shenton (10 years), Edna Kelly, Joan Dall (24 years0, Pat Adamson (12 years), Mrs. Dot Bloom, Mrs. Trudy Johnston.

Our Auxiliary decided to award certificates of appreciation to various members and friends of the Auxiliary who have contributed many hours of voluntary work over the years.

The Auxiliary was first formed in 1935.  We have a foundation member present today in Mrs. Lil Fallon – the only surviving foundation member.

As an Auxiliary, we continue to raise money through street stalls and subscriptions.  This helps finance the many pieces of equipment and furnishings that the hospital require, plus appliances for the domestic department.

We have a lovely hospital with a dedicated staff led by H.S.M. Karen Gelmi and a very caring Doctor in Dr. Fleitmann and to compliment that, we also have a chemist – Mr. Neil Edmands, who came here over 20 years ago with his family.  We are indeed lucky.

Our hospital has a newly renovated eastern wing, with consulting rooms for Physiotherapy, Mental Health and Childcare, a comfortable waiting room and separate entrance.  Aux have been asked to supply window treatments for this new area.

The late Mr. Jim Parker cannot go unacknowledged.  Through his generosity and that of the Estate of the late Charles Parker, which he managed, our hospital received something close to a million dollars towards the building of the Cuneata Wing for Aged Care, and many other large alterations within the hospital.  Our Auxiliary also benefited from a considerable donation.  And we must not forget Parker House which also benefited hugely from the Parker Estate.

Another person who I must also acknowledge is the late Mrs. Pat Adamson, who first joined the Auxiliary in 1964 and attended most meetings unless there was a special golf tournament on!!  Pat was elected President in 1988 and resigned in 2000.

Our Auxiliary has about 16 regular members who we refer to as “Committee”.  Many other residents become members each year but don’t necessarily attend our meetings, but their membership fee of $5 contributes greatly to our bank balance.  These subscriptions plus donations average about $1600 yearly.  Presently, we have $18,000 dollars invested and a $7000 working account.

Before concluding I would like to thank our present committee for providing afternoon tea and the hospital staff for setting up and soon to wait on us.  Very much appreciated, so thank you Karen and Joan.
